The Pembina Pipelines Corporation announced a $100,000 donation to the Alberta Food Banks over breakfast at the annual general meeting in July 2016.
“Although many food banks are still receiving donations of non-perishable items, there is a significant need for fresh, healthy food,” said Clint Walker of Pembina Pipeline.
The Fresh Food Fund grant program provides funds for rural food banks to purchase fresh, healthy and local food items. This fund supports current members of Alberta Food Banks.
Bernie Kreiner of the Hinton Food Bank was presented the first grant at our general meeting for $6,000, and he plans to use the funds to increase their clients’ access to nutritious products.
“Our plans to use the Fresh Food Fund include tripling the number of community garden plots used by Hinton Food Bank and its clients to grow fresh vegetables and help our clients learn how to grow their own fresh food. Also, we want to provide milk to families on some scheduled basis (probably using vouchers),” said Bernie Kreiner, Executive Director of the Hinton Food Bank.
