Food Banks Alberta does not distribute food to individuals. Rather we are the “food bank for food banks”, collecting and distributing large quantities of purchased and donated food to member food banks throughout the province.
Food Banks in Alberta are independent organizations registered as charities and/or not-for-profits that rely on a combination of community, corporate and government support to operate.
Like all Albertans, food banks also need money to pay their rent and utilities. They need to fuel their trucks and support the staff that serve their clients with respect and compassion. Donating money to food banks helps feed the organizations that feed their communities.
The people that require support of food banks in our province may surprise you. Our largest growth service demographic are families and individuals with jobs who, within the current affordability crisis, simply cannot make ends meet.
Food Banks Alberta supports our member food banks through advocacy, funding, training, information, and operations assistance. This allows food banks, particularly those that are small, rural and/or remote, to focus their time, efforts, and resources on what they do best: feeding their communities.
All you have to do is ask. Reach out to FBA or your local community food bank and simply ask what you can do to help. Donations of money and food are always appreciated, but there are also may other creative ways you can give your time, energy and enthusiasm to assist us in addressing food insecurity in Alberta.
Contact us, and we will do our very best to answer your questions. If we don’t have the answer, we will work hard to find it.
Food Banks Alberta services the entire province of Alberta through our member food banks. We have processes to ensure food is fairly distributed and gets into the hands of those who need it the most in a manner that is fast, efficient and effective.
